What is root canal treatment, and who is it for?

Root canal treatment removes the inflamed or infected pulp from inside the tooth's canals, cleans them and seals them — so your natural tooth can be kept and used instead of extracted. It stops the pain and the infection that could otherwise spread.

The dentist X-rays the canals before every case. A root-treated tooth is often more brittle than usual, so a crown is usually recommended afterwards to strengthen it and extend its life.

Who it's for

Decay reaching the pulp
A pimple or gum swelling near the root tip

Frequently asked questions

Does a root canal hurt?
It is done under local anaesthetic, so it is painless during treatment. Afterwards you may feel some tightness or tenderness for 2–3 days, which gradually eases.
How many visits does it take?
It depends on the tooth position and complexity — front teeth usually 1–2 visits, molars 2–3. The dentist estimates the number of visits before starting.
How much does it cost? Can I pay in instalments?
Front teeth 7,000–8,000 THB, premolars 9,000–11,000 THB, molars 12,000–15,000 THB (crown not included). 0% instalments up to 10 months.
Do I need a crown afterwards?
A root-treated tooth is often brittle and prone to cracking, especially molars, so a crown is recommended to strengthen it and extend its life.
Can I skip a root canal?
Leaving an infected tooth can worsen the pain, form an abscess at the root tip and spread until the tooth must be extracted. A root canal saves the natural tooth.
