What is a filling, and when do you need one?

A filling removes the decayed part of the tooth and seals it with material to restore its shape and function. It stops the decay reaching the pulp — which would then need a root canal — so filling early is simpler and cheaper.

Tooth-coloured composite is popular today for a natural, seamless look. The dentist checks and chooses the material to suit the position and size of the cavity; deep cavities may need a base first.

Frequently asked questions

Does a filling hurt?
Shallow cavities can often be filled without anaesthetic and painlessly; deeper cavities near the pulp use local anaesthetic, so it is painless during the procedure.
Tooth-coloured or amalgam — which is better?
Tooth-coloured material is natural and seamless, suiting both front and back teeth; amalgam is strong against chewing and suits inner molars. The dentist recommends by position and use.
How much is a filling? Is it covered by social security?
From 800 THB per surface, priced by the number of surfaces. You can use the dental social-security benefit up to 900 THB/year with no upfront payment.
What if the decay is too big to fill?
If it reaches the pulp it may need a root canal then a crown; if the tooth structure left is small it may need a crown. The dentist assesses and advises before starting.
