What is gum disease, and who is it for?

Gum (periodontal) disease is caused by calculus and bacteria building up below the gum line, making the gums inflamed, red and prone to bleeding. Left untreated it spreads and destroys the bone that holds the teeth, until they loosen and can eventually be lost.

The dentist measures the periodontal pockets and assesses the severity, then treats it with scaling and root planing to remove the deposits below the gum. Severe cases may need several visits or periodontal surgery as well.

Frequently asked questions

Does gum treatment hurt?
Scaling and root planing can feel sensitive where the gum is very inflamed; the dentist can use local anaesthetic to help. Afterwards there may be slight sensitivity that eases in 2–3 days.
Can receded gums grow back?
Gum that has receded usually does not grow back on its own, but treatment stops the disease progressing and preserves the remaining bone. Some cases use periodontal surgery — the dentist will assess.
How much does gum treatment cost?
Root planing from 600 THB per tooth; full-mouth scaling and root planing 10,000–14,000 THB depending on severity. 0% instalments for large cases.
How can I prevent gum disease?
Brush correctly, floss daily and have scaling every 6 months to reduce the plaque and calculus that cause it.
