What is a dental crown, and who is it for?
A dental crown is a cap that covers the whole tooth to restore its strength, shape and colour. It is commonly used on teeth that are cracked, worn or deeply decayed, or teeth that have had root canal treatment and are more brittle than usual — bringing back normal chewing with a natural look.
The dentist assesses your X-rays and the remaining tooth structure, then chooses the right type of crown — all-ceramic (EMax, Zirconia) for the most natural look, or porcelain-fused-to-metal for strength and value. It usually takes 2–3 visits to fit the permanent crown.
Types of crown and prices
Compare material, looks and strength before you decide
Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal
Strong against chewing forces and great value — ideal for back teeth; several grades by metal content
All-Ceramic EMax
The most natural, translucent look — light passes through close to a real tooth; ideal for front teeth
All-Ceramic Zirconia
Strong and good-looking in one, metal-free — suits both front teeth and molars that need durability
