What is a wisdom tooth, and why remove it?

A wisdom tooth is the rearmost molar that often erupts only partly or in the wrong position. It tends to push the neighbouring teeth and is hard to clean, so it risks decay, gum inflammation and recurring pain and swelling. Removing it helps prevent these problems from spreading over time.

The dentist takes an X-ray to check the root position, angle and closeness to the nerve for every case, then chooses the right approach — from a simple extraction to surgery for a tooth impacted in the bone.

Does wisdom tooth surgery hurt?

It is done under local anaesthetic, so you feel no pain during the procedure. Afterwards there may be tightness and swelling for 2–3 days, which eases with cold compresses and the recommended medication.

Does every wisdom tooth need surgery?

Not every one — a wisdom tooth that erupts straight, is usable and cleanable may not need removal. The dentist assesses this from your X-ray and advises you.

Is it covered by social security?

Yes. You can use the dental social-security benefit up to 900 THB/year with no upfront payment; any amount beyond the benefit is quoted before we start.

How long is recovery?

Most people return to normal life the next day; swelling gradually reduces over 3–5 days. Avoid very hot/hard food and smoking early on.

Can I leave a wisdom tooth in?

A misaligned wisdom tooth left in place can cause decay in the neighbouring tooth, gum inflammation or recurring pain. The dentist advises based on each case's risk.
