What is a dental crown, and who is it for?

A dental crown is a cap that covers the whole tooth to restore its strength, shape and colour. It is commonly used on teeth that are cracked, worn or deeply decayed, or teeth that have had root canal treatment and are more brittle than usual — bringing back normal chewing with a natural look.

The dentist assesses your X-rays and the remaining tooth structure, then chooses the right type of crown — all-ceramic (EMax, Zirconia) for the most natural look, or porcelain-fused-to-metal for strength and value. It usually takes 2–3 visits to fit the permanent crown.

Which crown is best?

No single type is best for everyone. Front teeth that prioritise looks often choose all-ceramic EMax, while molars under heavy load often choose Zirconia or porcelain-fused-to-metal. The dentist recommends by tooth position and use.

Does getting a crown hurt?

Shaping the tooth is done under local anaesthetic, so it is painless during the procedure. You may feel slight sensitivity with the temporary crown, which eases once the permanent one is fitted.

How much does a crown cost? Can I pay in instalments?

From 10,000 THB for porcelain-fused-to-metal, 12,000–17,000 THB for all-ceramic EMax and 16,000–18,000 THB for Zirconia. 0% instalments are available up to 10 months via participating credit cards.

How long does a crown last?

With good hygiene and by not biting hard objects, crowns often last many years to over a decade. Come for check-ups and scaling on schedule to care for the gum and crown margin.
