What is teeth whitening, and who is it for?

Teeth whitening uses a peroxide-based gel to lift stains and make teeth look brighter. There are at-home kits with custom trays, and in-clinic systems that use light or laser to speed up the result.

Before whitening, the dentist checks your oral health and usually recommends a scaling first for an even result. Whitening works on natural teeth but does not change the colour of fillings, crowns or veneers.

Usually around 6 months to 2 years, depending on your care and habits such as tea, coffee and smoking. You can re-whiten to keep the shade, as your dentist advises.

Does whitening make teeth sensitive?

You may feel mild sensitivity for the first 1–2 days, then it settles. At-home and cool-light options tend to be gentler; the dentist chooses the right strength for you.

At-home vs in-clinic — what's the difference?

At-home is gradual, shows results in 1–2 weeks and is budget-friendly. In-clinic (cool light/laser/ZOOM) shows results from the first session — ideal if you want them fast.

How much does whitening cost?

Will whitening also lighten crowns or veneers?

No. Whitening only changes natural teeth, not fillings, crowns or veneers. To match the shade, whiten your natural teeth first, then do that work.
